Heritage Ranch is a portion of the land that came under the jurisdiction of the King of Spain, by virtue of the Law of the Indies, upon the Spanish occupation of California in 1769. Ownership passed to the government of Mexico in 1822, after Mexico's Declaration of Independence from Spain and establishment of the sovereignty of the Republic of Mexico.
In 1848, following the Mexican War and signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, California became United States Territory. A portion of Heritage Ranch was included within the patent issued on May 18, 1884 by the United States of America to Jose Morales and recorded on December 3, 1884 in the office of the County Recorder, records of San Luis Obispo County, California.
